Greetings fellow Vigilant Citizens,
How are you today?
On this day, June 30th, in 1801, French economist Frédéric Bastiat was born. His most famous book, The Law, defines a just system of laws, demonstrates its worth for a free society, and explains how it protects private property and prohibits legalized plunder. It’s a kind of libertarian Bible.
But what’s going on in this crazy clown world 🤡 🌎 today?
A local man told reporters that hopefully the mushroom cloud that he saw was nothing major.
Frozen surfaces may be the future of tennis.
I agree that the world should celebrate America’s 249th birthday, even though I disagree with some of the author’s reasons for celebrating. The Marquis de Lafayette’s comment in a letter to his wife in 1777 still rings true today:
The happiness of America is intimately connected with the happiness of all mankind; she is destined to become the safe and venerable asylum of virtue, of honesty, of tolerance, and quality and of peaceful liberty.
Victor Davis Hanson gave the commencement address at Hillsdale College earlier this year, about decade after I first began my masters degree program at Hillsdale College. I agree with my friend Carl E. Scott that we should repeal Juneteenth as a national holiday. Titus Techera’s friends Zarko Minkov and Bernhardt Trout compiled all the Leo Strauss references to Jonathan Swift.
I agree with Ben McClintock that there is an “anti-conspiracy conspiracy.” I argued as much in my recent post on “Contra Conspiracy Denialism.” Just check out the symbolic pics of the month on The Vigilant Citizen website in case you think that so-called “conspiracy theorists” are the problem. Modern American society is obviously riddled with conspiracies, or with that which the Book of Mormon prophets call “secret combinations.”
I mostly agree with Connor Boyack that idolatry is a big problem among modern Latter-day Saints, although I think that Netanyahu is more to blame for problems in the Middle East than the average, ignorant Latter-day Saint. I agree that we should renounce war, and proclaim peace, even though I might quibble with Boyack about Moroni, Teancum, and other Book of Mormon heroes.
