We had a great conversation about Doctrine and Covenants 19 in our 2025 Come Follow Me group. We meet online every Sunday at 4:00 pm MST for our Gospel study and conversation. Join us if you like.
In my personal study and record I concluded my last post with D&C 19:21-22. The next verse (the Lord speaking to Martin Harris) is or ought to be a scripture mastery verse, or a verse to memorize and ponder:
Learn of me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my Spirit, and you shall have peace in me.
Obedience to every one of the Lord’s commandments always results in promised blessings. The promised blessing in this commandment is peace in Christ. It’s difficult to think of a greater blessing than that, especially considering the terrible turmoil, tumult, anxiety, confusion, darkness, and despair in the world. How do we obtain peace in Christ?
We learn of of Him.
We listen to His words.
We walk in the meekness of His Spirit.
Learn, listen, walk.
Simple.
What do we learn about Jesus Christ in Doctrine and Covenants 19?
What does it mean to you to “walk in the meekness of [His] Spirit”?
The rest of the section contains the Lord’s specific and joyful counsel and commandments to Martin Harris, including the following:
And speak freely to all; yea, preach, exhort, declare the truth, even with a loud voice, with a sound of rejoicing, crying—Hosanna, hosanna, blessed be the name of the Lord God!
Pray always, and I will pour out my Spirit upon you, and great shall be your blessing—yea, even more than if you should obtain treasures of earth and corruptibleness to the extent thereof. (D&C 19:37-38)
These are commandments that, however imperfectly, I am also trying to follow here in The Torch, speaking freely to all, preaching, exhorting, declaring the truth.
I look forward to studying Doctrine and Covenants 20-22, “The Rise of the Church of Christ,” this week.
